In March 1990, robbers stole 19 invaluable works of art worth $500 million from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston – including a legendary Vermeer – and disappeared forever. Thirty years on, art lovers are still guessing as to what happened to those artworks, and the FBI is offering a whopping $10 million for any information leading to their recovery.
While the Gardner theft is one of the most high-profile art robberies of the last two centuries, every year 20,000 works of art are stolen or go missing. In this vlog, I compare the prevalent theories about this theft and the possible motivations behind it and hope to hear your views on where the works might possibly be today.
